Once you've chosen a recipe -every week they have 14 different recipes-, you can buy all the ingredients there. So no extra trip to the supermarket! Every Wednesday they change the selection and three meals are on 35% sale. They just opened their second store in Amsterdam, on the Ceintuurbaan.

Fine Phintage

This smart-looking store opened its doors just a few weeks ago in the Pijp. 

It's called Phintage by Helen Yard.

You'll find nice, clean looking, unique pieces, for pretty affordable prices. I especially oohed and aahed over the jewellery and fashion belts with vintage looking buckles (already bought two!)

The Best Burgers in Town

Attention meat lovers, this article is for you!

I did some research on the best hamburgers in town and these places have made the shortlist: 

1. The Butcher

This burger bar recently opened its doors at Amsterdam's most famous street market and is already my favorite. Made from Aberdeen Angus beef, the burgers are nice & juicy. And they carry funny names, such as "The Codfather", "Silence of the Lamb" and "The Cow Boy". To complete your burger, order some French fries on the side; they taste homemade.

When I was studying at the University of Amsterdam I was always looking for different places to eat than the student restaurant. Luckily, my faculty was located in the centre of Amsterdam, so alternatives were plenty. But although I had my favorites (Gartine, Harkema, De Jaren and Singel 404), I always thought a good sandwich store was missing. Then last week I went for a spin in my alma mater neighborhood and was surprised to see a new lunch venue had opened: De Laatste Kruimel (The Last Crumb).

Conservatorium Hotel

Nowadays, hotel lobbies and restaurants are the place to be. It took a while to implement this trend in Amsterdam, but now we are most certainly getting there. For a few years we were confined to the College Hotel with its stylish bar, restaurant and fire place. Then last Summer the Sky Lounge (in the DoubleTree Hilton) opened and we all trotted to the 11th floor to enjoy cocktails with a view. And now the College Hotel and Sky Lounge are getting some competition: very recently (2 weeks ago), a boutique hotel with stylish lobby and restaurant opened in the beautiful and stately building on the Van Baerlestraat, near the P.C. Hooftstraat.

When in Amsterdam, lunch as the locals do

At first sight, this traditional lunch room may not look so appealing to you. With its white tiles on the walls and its not so inviting bar stools. But, If you do decide to lunch here, I promise you won't be disappointed! "Eetsalon Van Dobben" or just "Van Dobben", as it is called, is a true institution in Amsterdam and people have been coming to this place since 1945. This year they opened their second lunch room in the Pijp. 

Lovely Leafde

If you are looking for a shop to buy some presents, please visit "Leafde". This boutique is located on the Prinsengracht, near The 9 Streets. You'll find gifts and gadgets for young and old. Soft cuddly toys, blankets, lounge and sleep wear, postcards and many more things that will make you go "ooh and aah".

French restaurants in Amsterdam

Massimo Dutti Amsterdam

A few weeks ago the first Massimo Dutti store was opened in Amsterdam. For those among you, who don't know what I am talking about: Massimo Dutti is a Spanish fashion brand with a classic, even a bit of a preppy, style. Besides clothes, they sell shoes, leather bags, scarves and jewelry. Like sister company Zara, prices are lower than you would expect. A Valhalla for fashion lovers!

100 jaar Chinees eten in Nederland

Afgelopen weekend was het 100 jaar geleden dat de eerste Chinezen zich in Nederland vestigden. Een mooie gelegenheid om te schrijven over mijn favoriete Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam! Tevens vind je onderaan dit bericht een aantal bestel-suggesties om in deze restaurants uit te proberen en geef ik kort weer wat de do's en don'ts zijn als je Chinees gaat eten.

Vamos a la Venta

Een goedbewaard geheim is traiteur La Venta in de Pijp. Wist je bijvoorbeeld dat je hier een heerlijk broodje kunt bestellen met versafgesneden Pata Negra ham? Het brood wordt gebakken in een steenoven, waardoor het een aparte smaak krijgt.

Noordermarkt

De Noordermarkt op maandagochtend is al jaren een begrip in Amsterdam. Nu is het helaas niet voor iedereen weggelegd om op een doordeweekse dag te gaan winkelen, maar als je tijd hebt, neem dan eens een kijkje op de leukste markt van Amsterdam. 

ODE (Oosterdokseiland)

Vandaag begin ik met mijn eerste van, waarschijnlijk, vele blogberichten over restaurants in Amsterdam.

Als onderwerp van mijn eerste bericht heb ik gekozen voor een modern stukje Amsterdam: het Oosterdokseiland. 

Toen ik 13 jaar geleden in de stad aankwam, was dit nog een tamelijk karakterloos gebied. Je had het afgedankte PTT gebouw, een boot-hotel ("Botel") en de Chinese boot, die als enige alle bestemmingsplannen van de gemeente heeft overleefd. Het enige dat een beetje swung gaf aan het Oosterdokseiland was de drijvende studentensociëteit, althans dat vond ik, aangezien ik daar dagelijks te vinden was. De boel moest dus worden opgepept en hoewel ik in eerste instantie niet stond te springen om de vertrouwde sociëteit te verlaten, ben ik ontzettend blij met het resultaat. Op het Oosterdokseiland is nu weer van alles te beleven. En het wordt nog beter: naast de Openbare Bibliotheek en het Conservatorium zijn ze nu appartementen, restaurants en winkels aan het bouwen. Met al die nieuwe gebouwen heeft het Oosterdokseiland internationale allure gekregen. 

Little Italy in Amsterdam

Ik prijs mezelf gelukkig dat ik al drie jaar in de Pijp heb mogen wonen. Niet alleen kan ik dagelijks mijn boodschappen doen op de Cuyp; als ik geen zin heb om te koken heb ik keuze uit de Indonesische (Sari Citra!), Japanse (Zen!), Franse (The French Café Bistrot en Braque) of Griekse (Romios) keuken. En als groot liefhebber van Italiaans eten ben ik ontzettend blij dat er de laatste jaren veel goede Italiaanse eettentjes bij zijn gekomen. 

Vandaag deel ik dan ook graag mijn favoriete Italiaanse adressen in de Pijp met je!
